Can't do my own rear brakes lol.
ive always used a set of needle nose and pushed the retainer in and twisted it or you could get this tool http://www.google.com/products/catal...d=0CIYBEPICMAI#
my old shoes have it but it is just pressed into the pad so tight it doesn't move.. so i have to use a vice or something to press new pin into new shoe. I'll be outside trying to force it in for a while.

what i ended up doing was vice grips to get it seated then lay it down to where i can bang on it without it warping and use a screw driver and hammer to drive it in till flush.

You should buy the brake tools, not much money, I forget.
But since you want to be a DIY'er, its something to keep in tool box for future.
