R12 freon for 2001 Dakota
It's 134a. The Feds passed a law in 1993 eliminating the use of R12. The only people who can buy R12 now are licensed and trained AC shops, and even then it's so expensive it might make more sense to just convert over to 134a.

I have a friend who does A/C recharge. He did my '93 Tempo (insert laff here) it was a an R12 system ,he converted it to R134A . I had to buy a different oil for the compressor ,he supplied the O rings.
I concur that the your 2001 is a R134A system. there is some kits that you can buy like Red-Tek it come s with some gauges and the sealant and a charge kit with step by step instructions. It runs about $40 bucks here in Canada.

They just don't want to do their homework and want others to do it for them.
i find myself getting annoyed lately when i look at all the new threads posted. ahhh my headliner fell is this a common problem. ahhh my break pedal went to the floor is this a common problem? what cold air intake works and gives me the best hp and cost the least for my v6?
don't get me wrong. these could have all been valid new threads back in the day when the site was created but damn use a search function.. that is why it is on the site.
i know when i got my first car my dad wouldn't let me drive it till i was able to do my own work and trouble shooting on it. now granted he did start teaching me how to do stuff on my own as soon as i was big enough to turn a wrench.
okay sorry end rant.

Can we move the above reply to the whiney section? Im actually going to contribute to this gentlemans issue. The system which you are refering about will take 1.8 lbs. of R134A refigerant. R12 was phased out due to its long life once it hit the atmosphere. R134a doesnt stick around nearly as long and actually cools more efficiently.
