My 98 3.9 Dakota work truck just died while running down the interstate. Tested the fuel pump and its bad. Where are you guys getting your pumps from. Advanced wants $225 for the assembly. I can get the assemble off ebay for $116, but im sure its some chinese made junk. Can you just buy a fuel pump and stick it in the sending unit, or is buying the whole assembly recommended? A new fuel pump will also come with a new fuel gauge sending unit, all as one complete assembly. I have no idea on the ebay pumps, personally I think it is best to buy a good quality name brand part from a local parts store in case you have a problem with the pump and need a warranty exchange. I bought my fuel pump at Advance, it is the Airtex brand, I am not sure where it was made but I have had it in my truck for about 18 months now, no problems with it at all. The regular price was about $220.00. I paid for it online, used one of the Advance discount promo codes and saved 40 bucks on it. You could use the discount code VISA and save $50.00 off the regular price of your new pump, pay for it online and pick it up at your local Advance store.

I have saved a lot of money using the Advance discount codes. They usually have some good ones available. Here is a link to a list of their promo codes. Some are current, some may not be, but the website online check out will tell you if the code is not accepted.

Autozone is trying to offer online discount codes too, but they do not have as many deals as Advance. Autozone does not accept Pay Pal either, as far as I can tell.

I got mine from autozone for 138.00 I got it for so cheap cause I found one online and they will price match anything as long as its the same brand. I've had a lot of problems with advanced and their workers so I try to keep away from them as much as I can.

 

I see many people with fuel pump problems on this forum Im guessing it will be my turn soon with my 98 Dakota.

Looks like 10 to 12 years is the change out time.

So the only way to replace my pump is unbolt the bed of the truck I read one guy unbolted the front of the bed and just loosened the back of bed and tilted it back like his truck was a dump truck and changed out the pump.

Has anyone done that?

 

If your spending the time to unbolt it to make it like a dump truck might as well spend the extra time to take out 2 more bolts and just take the whole thing off. I took mine off in a hr 8 bolts, 2 wire plugs, 3 fuel filler screws. I used the huge steal beam in my garage to my advantage. I put a 2x6 under my bed rails and then wrapped a chain around it and hooked a come a long to the beam and the chain and I hoisted my bed up by myself and drove my truck out.

Not to mention while my bed was off I was able to sand my whole frame down and paint it.

Thats great having the steal beam in the garage makes it look easy nice pictures too.

Did you see the guy that cut out a section of his bed to change out his pump how crazy is that what was that guy thinking just trashed his truck.

I don't think they sell the pump that way, without the fuel level sending unit. I know you can buy a sending unit separate from a pump assembly, but not the other way around. I did that job once, I think it was on a Chrysler mini-van. I had to replace just a fuel level sending unit as a warranty repair, and it was a huge PITA. For as much trouble as it is and the age and mileage on your existing sending unit, it makes a lot more sense to me to just replace both parts with a new pump/sending unit assembly. That is just my opinion on it. I hate working with gasoline. Fuel pump replacement is a job I only want to do once and be done with it for a very long time.
