Default Input Shaft Bearing? Shaft Play?? 98 Dakota Manual (video)

Hey,

This is for a V6 Dodge Dakota MTX. Upon downshifting the transmission makes a loud whine as the input shaft speed "spools up" to match the wheel speed. Once the clutch is released (engaged) the whine stops. In neutral there is no noise with the clutch either pressed or depressed as the input shaft is not spinning. The problem is not the TOB.

I think my input shaft bearing is bad. There is a LOT of shaft play. Would you say this is too much?

Some synchronizer noise is normal when shifting.

I think there's more going on.

I'm thinking you have a lot of play at the pilot bearing between the input and output shafts, not the one at the crankshaft but I'd bet its pretty rough as well.

Some play is normal, but it does seem excessive.

It's not just some noise, it's very noticeable. Im sure I can get the input shaft bearing out w\o a complete disassemble. What about the pilot bearing? Would that require a complete disassembley of the mainshaft? The FSM for the 2000 dakota only lists complete rebuild procedures and I am not sure I can get the pilot bearing out.

By the way what mtx does a 98 dakota have? The 2000 FSM lists an NV1500 and NV3500. The images appear different than what I have. My transmission has a plate that reads 52107757

Dodge used to use an AS82 transmission in the Dak, but I thought it was before '98.

If it is the pilot bearing, you may as well just pick up an overhaul kit and rebuild the entire transmission.
