Your 04 should be okay from what I've read with the stock efan.
To take the fan clutch off: take off the shroud (try not to break it in half like I did lol), next get a nice big crescent wrench, put it on the big bolt in the middle of the fan clutch, put a lot of pressure on the belt (I just pushed down hard with my hand), and turn the wrench to the left. Once it's loose, you should be able to just spin it right off. You can leave the shroud off for a little bit so you can see how hot it gets and you can easily put the fan back on if needed.

Yes, that is correct. I guess they're randomly on the 3.9's.

This is just my theory. I think the standard efan (on the 4.7) is good enough for normal ON road conditions and is also needed for the A/C. Unless you're towing in hilly areas, the mechanical fan won't be missed. I also think the question of efan or no efan on the 3.9 and 5.2 is down to if they have A/C or not.
Generally, the harder you work the engine ON the road, the faster you go and the more air goes through the rad.
OFF road is a different story. The engine can be working very hard but with the truck moving slowly, and the efan ISN'T up to the job. That's why there's a mechanical fan for the few times that its needed.
I've only had my mechanical fan come on once in 5 years whilst on the road, and was when towing my caravan in the middle of summer in a hilly part of France!
I think I'm going to remove the mechanical fan now that winter is finally here and see how it goes. If I'm right in my theory, I won't be putting it back on until I go away on holiday in the summer!

Mechanical fan is **** poor at idle... truck stays at good temps with my 5.2L. when the truck is moving; but at low RPM there is simply not enough air flow coming from the mech fan.. this is where an e-fan comes to play it can go all the way to full RPM and Max CFM where the mech. fan simply can not.. no pull from the motor other than the amperage draw freeing up that sluggish feeling when the fan is engaged.. not only that.. that mech. fan will only pull full potential for so long;.. if you get on it at any point its going to disengage. E-fan wont.. with the right kit and control box running off the factory temp sending unit (Which I will utilize) and then the extra relay to turn the fan on while AC is on too.. and for off-roaders this is were good bottom shrouds come to play to keep excessive amounts of mud and water off the fan and off the belts and pulleys.
Search for a thread with the HHR fan.. guy took photos on his Magnetta Dak.. very nice however I'm going with a different controller.

I haven't noticed any mpg gains yet, but it's only been a few days, plus I've been gunning it a lot. I bet if you drive it normally without a heavy right foot you'll see a little improvement.
