Question Need help with cruise control

I have a 2000 Dakota that has a 1998 Durango 5.2L in it. I want to hook up the cruise control, but have no idea where and what to get. And don't know where it even goes on the motor. Does anyone have any ideas about this?

I assume you have cruise now. All you need is a new servo cable.

No problem on the engine change. You should be able to use the servo cable from a 5.9 which was available in 2000. I think it's dealer only. It's not expensive, fortunately.

The throttle bracket should have the hole in it for the servo cable already.

Remove the servo and undo the existing cable (2 bolts). Gently pull it away from the servo a little. You'll see a little clip that you need to pull off to disconnect the cable.

Install the new cable and route it up to the throttle body. Done!

No worries.

You can try a boneyard or still get them new. You'll need the mounting bracket, servo, and the cable. The bracket is specific to the Dak/Durango and mounts near the RH headlight on the fender.

Earlier years had it mounted in a different location and use a different bracket.

The servos from 1999-2000 should be the same, they just use a different bracket. I don't have the part number but the same servo was used in different vehicles.

The 2001 uses a different servo, not compatible with the computer in your truck.

There is also a vacuum line that runs to the servo. It's hard plastic, your dealer can get it or you might find one intact at the boneyard.

It's a very simple install once you get the parts. I've found the bracket ($6),servo ($66), and cable ($32) new online.

Another option to consider is using an aftermarket cruise. Then you would not have to look all over town and the internet locating and buying parts and brackets. Modern aftermarket cruise controls work great, are electronically controlled so there is no need to mess around with vacuum canisters or any of that. You also would not have to mess around with integrating factory cruise control buttons in your steering wheel, and you would not have to do any work with the clock spring and/or air bag on the steering wheel either.

I put an aftermarket Rostra cruise on my truck back in January of 2006. It has worked great ever since, not even one single problem with it at all. It holds a constant steady speed no matter if I am on a flat road, going up or down hill. My cruise was easy to install, but I have installed cruises before so I had a good idea of what to expect. I took my time with it and did it in a few hours one Saturday afternoon. I have no idea how much it costs rounding up all the parts for a factory cruise but I only paid $200.00 for mine (that was 6 years ago, they might cost a little more now) and it came with all of the parts I needed all in one box. Mine looks a little different but is very similar to this one here:

The control handle they sent with it is the one right in the middle of the pictures on the right side of the page, it's the one with the rubber bellows around the end of it. I bought my cruise at a truck accessories store where they sell bed liners and nerf bars and all that.

I am not saying aftermarket is the best way to do it. If you want a factory cruise it can be done. I just think an aftermarket cruise is every bit as reliable, is much easier to install, probably costs less and works just as well as a factory cruise. Just my 2 cents on it.
