Default rear tires/advice

ok so i want to start prepping for the spring by getting drag radials. here are my 2 options.

1: keep the stock size rim and use my spare rim and get another and get a radials for them. looking at a 255/60/16

2: up the rim size to 17, and get a fat rear tires, here;s my question, how wide of a tire can i get for the rears? i found a set of toyo tq radials that are 345/40/17

what do you think??

edit: after more research i found that i would need wider rims to fit 345's. now im leaning towards just a 16inch slick since i already have 1 rim.

Well it depends. If you are spinning your 265's like crazy maybe the 345 would be a better choice but than again thats alot of tire to be turning which might hurt you. the 255 are probably gonna be the better choice since you know that they will fit and I don't think you are making crazy power that you will spin 255 slicks

ive got 245's actually, too small imo. but 255 slicks are with out a doubt better than my pos all terrain. my buddy has nitto drag radials on his camaro and loves them.

4x4?

When you're looking at larger tires for the back, are you making sure the diameter is close to the diameter of the fronts? Wouldn't it be a problem on a 4x4 to have much difference?

Yes, i am assuming he already knows that 2 different size tires between front and back would literally explode the transfer case if put in 4x4.

345s are so overkill for a Dakota that will probably run 15s or so. I don't see why you would ever need anything over a 295 for a vehicle with 200hp to the rear wheels.

And yeah, if you plan on driving this thing in 4wd at all (especially seeing you plan to launch it in 4wd) you shouldn't have tires that are different sizes. Even different widths can become a problem although it probably won't. I wouldn't start running different rim sizes and stuff.

If you really plan on dragging a lot you might want to consider something different. Maybe you're not interested in doing this, but I would keep an eye out for an R/T or even a 2wd reg cab/cc 5.2/4.7 and then you can do what ever you want with the tire sizes, it weighs less, and is more practical. This might not be in your interest at all and maybe you're not planning to take it to the strip all that much but if you're I would start to consider other options. There isn't much snow in Kansas or Seattle really...
