Stock 3.55 gears to 4.56 gears
Hey everyone,
I have a 2003 3.7l Dodge Dakota 5 speed manual with stock 3.55 gears. The tires are 31s I think. I also have a 1998 GMC Sonoma 2.2l which pulls better loads. With that being said, I am going to replace stock gears with 4.56 gears and plan to pull the sun a little closer to Minnesota right now.
If anyone knows where to get used or new gears please help me out! I would rather buy used gears, but there isn't much available.
Also were there Dodges with stock 4.56s that I could find at a junk yard??!
THanks!!

They never did offer 4.56. I think they offered 4.56 in the older rams but those axle's were dana 44's so that would be a no go.
Head over to http://www.ringpinion.com/ They have a bunch of stuff to choose from they have the high performance ones and then the standard ones which are about a 600.00 difference. Their standard ones start around 150ish to about 400.00 depending on which rear you have.

Thanks for the advice. I got some quotes and it looks like it was going to cost me 600-700 bucks for everything. I think I am going to look for a biogger truck. If I could get setup for 300-400 bucks, I would probably consider it. It's too bad Dodge didn't put better gears in there trucks.

It's a mid-sized truck...and I have no problem towing with 3.55s. Maybe you just need a better motor? I mean honestly...to complain about gears with a 3.7 is like putting a trailer on a prius and wondering what happened...
To get anything over 5K behind a Dak, without better brakes etc, would scare the ell outta me...esp going over 30mph. I tow around 6500 with a GMC and it can be hairy stopping in a hurry. I've also had roughly 5500 in my truck/trailer and that was enough for me...pulling is a lot easier than stopping!

What is considered to high RPM? With my 318, automatic, 355 gears and 29 inch tall tires i am very happy with being able to go 75 at 2050 rmp and 100 at 2550 roughly. I would love more pull and acceleration while in 3rd and 4th(OD) gear mainly. What would you recommend? 373, 392 or 410? Most of my driving is city with some 2 hour freeway trips once a month or so at 75. I am totally comfortable in the 3k range for rpm, since im 17 i hot rod the hell out of this truck and reach redline in first very often.
