Default instument cluster swap

How exchangable are the clusters from one truck to the next? My wife has a 98 dakota with a 4 cyclinder, and a standard trans. Crazy thing is there is not a tachometer in it. Can another truck with different drive train be a donor for the dash?
Maybe a small aftermarket one would be easier, but where would I hook up the signal wire to?
Thanks, my ram has a tach and its an auto.

It should be possible as long as you get a cluster from about '98-'00. 2001 up would definitely not work in your '98 - different computer bus.

The tach signal comes from the PCM on the same CCD bus as all the other information so it might be as easy as plugging it in.

The only issue I see is the odometer. If I recall the mileage is stored in the cluster and the PCM. They won't match.
