rack repair question
Ive looked around the forum some but didnt find a good answer. My rack and pinion is leaking out the top around the input shaft. Can that seal be replaced? The price of the complete assembly is kind of expensive, around 200 dollars. I'm usually working on my Ram not the wife's Dakota so I was looking for some help. BTW its a 98 Dakota 2wd with the little I 4. Hey, its the little lady's Dodge.

best is
I think if you could post a pic of this leaking thing I would understand exactly what you need.
I’m not getting exactly what it is that is leaking is it one of the tubes into the assembly?
I have one of the 2.5 engines it could just be an O-ring if it’s leaking from the inlet or outlet lines or the clamp is weak after years of use my clamp snapped on me as I replaced the feedback line or maybe it’s the tank is leaking and the fluid is dripping down the line onto the part you are talking about.
Can you post any pic's

okay , here is a pic of my steering rack , it seems to be leaking out the top where the shaft is, there isnt any oil by the hoses, one of them swings way away from the rack so it would be pretty obvious and I have been under there, cleaned everything off and the oil is definitly coming out the top. With everything I have read, a remaned. rack is probably the way to go. its most likely high pressure leaking past the internal o rings and finding its way out. Its like a quart a week leak!!
