Default Brake Lights not working

Hey guys, I'm not very experienced fixing issues with my vehicles. I had an issue with this a few weeks ago where my brake lights stopped working and a buddy of mine helped me out. He fiddled with one of the internal relays and got them work I can't remember which one is was. The light directly on the back of the cab works just not the ones on the tail the parking lights work fine. I have a 1998 Dakota 4X4 V6 Extended Cab.

Thanks for the help!
-Kyle

Did you check your brake light switch on your brake pedal? I assume there is still a switch there. Many years ago there was...am I showing my age?

Do you know where the relay was located? Under the hood or in the fuse bank in the door jam?

If the light on the cab works the brake light switch is working correctly.

I think you have a bad multifunction switch.

There is no relay for the brake lights.

I thought maybe it could have been something similar to the problem that I was having with the passenger-side turn signals which was fixed by replacing the electronic flasher but the multifunction switch makes total sense.

My bad

There is still a switch there, the relay was located in the panel in the door jam, I also discovered tonight that none of the light are working. I'm going to try getting a new switch, how do I uninstall/install the switch I see the plug with all the wires I'm assuming that has to come out

Sorry, I haven't changed a brake light switch in years so I would hate to guess at how they are installed now. I would say look at the new one and figure it out, it shouldn't be too difficult.

Disconnect the battery first to change the switch.

REMOVAL
(1) Disconnect switch harness.
(2) Press and hold brake pedal in applied position.
(3) Rotate switch counterclockwise about 30° to align switch lock tab with notch in bracket.
(4) Pull switch rearward out of mounting bracket and release brake pedal.

Installation:
(1) Press and hold brake pedal down.
(2) Align tab on new switch with notch in switch bracket. Then insert switch in bracket and turn it clockwise about 30° to lock it in place.
(3) Connect harness wires to switch.
(4) Release brake pedal.
(5) Move the release lever on the switch to engage the switch plunger. The switch is now adjusted and can not be adjusted again
