Default Rotella T6

Recently I've read about a lot of gas engines using 5w40 Rotella even though Rotella is marketed as a diesel oil. I've read that it will quite start up ticking or small knocks. On a the WRX forum almost the entire forum uses it even though the manual says use 5w30 they use the 5w40 stuff. A boss of mine ran it in his F-150 and it had 300 something thousand miles on it when it got rid of it so it can't be harming it?

I know my truck ticks a lot on start up and was wondering if it would be alright to use Rotella? It is more viscus being a 40 weight oil but it doesn't seem to stop the WRX crowd. They talk about it like its the end all be all of oil. What is it about Rotella that makes it so great? Why isn't this same technology used for gasoline engine oils?

Anyone have experience or input on this? I would like to get rid of the start up tick.

I run rotella t 10w30 in my 3.9 with no problems, it does help with the ticks a little bit. Use to run 15w40 befor i put new cam and lifters in to quiet it down.

I'm just wondering what is so great about it that makes it that much better than other oils. I believe its a base IV stock but there are others out there, not a ton, but there are others.

T6 is the fully synthetic 5w40 Diesel oil. Diesel oils tend to have much high zinc, other minerals and more Detergents. They are also formulated to suspend soot and other contaminants and diesel fuel. Makes sense that someone would want to put this higher quality oil in their gas engine. Would I do it, probably not. Would i put anything other than Rotella in my Cummins, Hell no.

I've just noticed that diesel guys speak of it so highly as well as some car guys. Guys run it in their b5 s4's and wrx's and other cars because of it's protection at higher temps and abuse turbo cars take.

I agree, One of my teammembers runs only T6 in his Chevy truck. more additives and higher soot control is a good thing, I am going to switch next oil change

Just like the other guy said it helps cut down the carbon/soot build up. I run it in my cummins and truckers run it in their rigs some will say it will come back with better oil analysis than more expensive oils and some say its all a cheap oil. I look at it this way if you run it in a dozer and in a rig it has to be able to stand up to some severe duty applications so in a gas engine its got to be perfectly fine for it

I can completely understand why someone with a gas turbo car would want to run T6. A turbo is a pretty abusive part with extremely high temperatures and can produce some soot in the oil that conventional oils might not tolerate as well.

if I'm not mistaken rotella was original used in aircraft engines the old prop jobs before turbojet engines

I brought this up with my father, and he thinks the only real issue with running this stuff in a gas engine is that when some of it burns (all engines burn a little oil) it could plug up your catalytic converter sooner as cats for gas engines aren't meant for that stuff.

but that's just his 2 cents, it may be fine
