Alternator Amps
I have a 2000 Dakota 3.9L V6. Need to get a new alternator. I have a choice between a 117amp and 136amp, which one do I get. What's the difference? I can't go by what alternator is in there now because I don't even know if it's the right one. Person who had truck before me did all kinds of mickey mouse fixes on it. Thanks.

in my 2001 factory service manual, it shows two generator. the 3.9 comes with only two "117 sae amps, pt 56029913aa, or 136 sae amps, pt 5603914aa". iam not sure that helps. it looks like it could a bosch or a denso, but it doesnt show how to tell the deference, ie no part no. it looks like the wiring will handle 136 amp just fine. i would use the 136.

Most Dakota's with 3.9's came with a 117 amp Denso alternator. Usually you have to have other options like the towing package to get the 136 amp alternator. A real easy way you can find out for sure is call the parts guys at the Dodge dealer. Give them your VIN and they can tell you what alternator you have. You can also compare your alternator to the pics of alternators on parts store web sites. The 136 and 117 amp alternators do look different from each other. If you have a 117 now and replace it with a 136 it won't hurt anything but it really is not necessary unless you run a lot of electrical accessories that draw a lot of current, like a mega-watt stereo, multiple sets of driving lights, a winch, high-powered CB, etc.

HI; of all the numbers on my alt. sticker, i don't see that number. I did find that my denso is a 90 amp. I have a 96 dadota 3.9. both autozone and oreillys want 159.99 with the core exchange! may could find cheaper but can't wait 2 days. My oem alt. say 'made in japan' so i'm hoping thats still the case.
