Default timing chain lose

Timing chain lose so the timing is off.

Over rich why O2 out of range/old

No cat or old cat

Low fuel pressure

MAP sensor

Vacume leak

Sometimes it’s all your sensors are just old I replace every sensor in my Dakota and she runs like a champ now.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I drove the truck this morning to work and started it cold - backfired within 30 seconds. Shut it off and restarted it again and it still backfired. Third restart finally worked - pisses people off behind you too because when you're foot is on the gas you arn't going anywhere.

Anyway - the truck had the cat replaced in either September/October 2011, I have the bill because it used to be my grandfathers truck. He paid $2000 cause the damn stealership ripped him off - still pisses me off to this day.

I thought it may have something to do with the timing too, but I don't hear any ticks or rattles to indicate the chain is bad.

I'll try to check the injectors and switch them.

As for the EGR valve - I'm not sure where it is so I'll have to google that. Also I have a scan tool but I would need to figure out how to read the injectors.

Originally when I got the truck I got 4 codes:

P0300 - Multiple Misfires
P0301 - Cyl 1 Misfire
P0303 - Cyl 3 Misfire
P0455 - Evap Leak

I cleared those and never once got an engine light back until 3 days ago. Just P0300 and P0301 now.

I appreciate all the suggestions - I will try to do everything that I can by myself before I will have to bring it in for the 4TH TIME. The truck is just getting worse.

Cheers guys.

Unhappy $2000 cat wow must of been a gold plated cat

$2000 cat wow must have been a gold plated cat?

Most cats are $100 installed DIY style.

Just imagine what the extra $1900 could have got ya.

Damned Rats at the stealerships that’s theft in my book.

most of the mopar caps i have seen have a vent hole between the center tower and the spark plug wire towers. it might have a rubber cover. the only thiing its good for is letting moisture into the cap, and you DONT want that. even in kansas we have enough moisture to cause trouble, i dont know what people in the north west do.

Yeah at the time my grandfather still owned the truck and had it serviced at the dealership. I have all of the bills and its crazy seeing he had it serviced every 500-1000 kms (which is like 6 monts) because he didn't drive it often due to his age. I was originally gonna bring the truck down to where I live and have a shop do it for $300-$400.

He just decided to go ahead with the dealer tho - oh well.

And thanks Moe, I understand what you're saying there now, I dont often use A/C or heat so shouldn't be a problem.

the moisture in the cap has more to do with moisture in the air. the thing i like is that its so easy to do. at first i used PCV Breather Filter, its white. but i found just fill the vent with J-B weld works fine.

Hey guys,

I just gave my grandfather a call - when he still owned the truck he had to have the cat replaced like I said above. He had it replaced at the stealership and I was asking him if he noticed if the backfire happened around that same time. I purchased the truck knowing it had a backfire but I didn't expect it to be this frustrating. He says it was shortly after the cat was replaced. Could it be possible that the truck is backfiring due to the exhaust work?

I'm not getting any codes other than Cyl 1 misfire - I have a fancy code reader that my father gave me as a gift but so far I only know how to read/erase codes. Is there anyway to test exhaust systems? I know you can test the fuel system somehow - I'll have to refer to my code readers manual.

Just trying to narrow down possible problems because I don't think it's ignition related. Everything was replaced except for the coil pack.

Thanks again.

Did it start before or after you replaced the:
-Plugs
-Wires
-Cap & Rotor
-Crankshaft Positioning Sensor

If after, something is wrong with the above. If before:

Swap the injector off of number 1 and put it on another cylinder. Does it still backfire?

Everything I have listed began happening BEFORE the backfire - these were all changes (excluding the cat) to try and fix the problem.

I plan on finding sometime during the weekend to try swapping the injectors but I have a full time weekday job and a part time weekend job so time lately has been tight.

I will let you know the results when I am able to get to it, but in the meantime other suggestions are highly welcome and appreciated.
