Hey everyone. I had a whine in my engine a month back and got the serpentine belt replaced. That fixed the problem, but now I'm hearing another whine while idling. I was told that the water pump had some play to it. Would that make a whining sound?

It could be the water pump.

The alternator and power steering pump can also whine.

Is it the water pump or the clutch fan that has the play? Watch the pulley.

$900 for the water pump? No way.

It's not that big a job. Feel like getting your hands dirty? You have to remove a few hoses, the fan/clutch assembly and like 7 bolts.

Check around then. That's an outrageous price.

If you feel like trying, let us know.

Just had my waterpump done in January, cost me $400 at a good shop.

Wasn't tackling it in the winter time but its nice now (atleast where I live) so I'd say try it if you have a weekend to yourself.

If not, $900 is way too much.

Check your power steering fluid too, mine was whining because it was a little low.

Water pump is not hard to change even if you have never done it. Get a Haynes manual and will take it through it step by step. Manual around 20 bucks water pump 40 bucks. Also check Power steering pump and Alternator. Usually the bearings go bad on the Water pump and you will hear a grinding sort of noise.
