Default 9.25 Rear axle Trac loc Clips

I have yet another question.

I have the 9.25 rear axle with 3.92 gears with the trac lock.

I know these have a habit of failing where the retainer clips that are used with the clutch pac assemble either fall out or back out and cut the carier.

I removed the rear cover to change the gear lube and to inspect.

I jacked her up and posi still works, I see two clups 180 degree apart.

Is there only two clips used? I just want make sure before I button it up.

There was some fuzz on the magnet in the bottom of the housing but the ring and pinion looked good, good wear pattern etc

I havent opened the diff up in about 30 K and the unit has 55K miles. I did pump it out about 10K miles ago and have used Amsoil 75w-90 severe gear with the mopar additive. Will use 75w-140 this time.

SO i need to know how many clips there are, if just two I guess I am still good, if more I'll have to look more and make sure there still there.

Thanks for any input.

There's just two from what I recall. If they did break, you'd find them - I did.

Are you sure you want to put in 75w-140? 75w-90 is spec'd for 2000 and 2001.

Thanks for the reply, glad there is two and mine are still intact.

Per the viscosity, I dont think it really matters. A little higher should protect the gear set better. I have the Class 4 with the tow package.

I also have a 02 Grand cherokee, without the tow package they recomment 80w-90 Dino, with tow package 75W-140 synhtetic.

So to me basically there telling you if you tow or want extra protection run the synthetic and go up in grade on the viscosity.

I am probably going to buy a Detroit True trac and have my friend at the dealer install it, but no hurry now that I see my diff is OK. Will probably do this next year, since I dont drive the Durango that much.

My clips didn't break until I after I changed the fluid at about 90k. I caught them at 115k.

I have the tow package too but don't see anything about heavier oil. I do use the synthetic. The gears looked great, just the darn clips.

Hi

So what did you do after they broke or did it grenade the carrier?

I am told they usually fail after 100K, dont know why. Maybe the clutch packs get worn and the clips fall out or work their way out.

I have changed the fluid a few times, once around 10K (removed the cover and cleaned) at 25K and 40K (pumped them out and refilled).

It didn't grenade anything. The gears, carrier, etc. were all fine.

Put in a rebuilt carrier, it was easier, and it had a redesigned clip. So far, no issues.

What did they do to the clip to redesign it? Looks to me that it fits into the indent in the carrier. Did they change the material of the clip?

Per my comment on viscosity I was referrring to the Dana 226A in my Jeep. If you ordered the WJ with no tow, came with 80W-90 dino, if you ordered the Class IV, you got 75w-140 synthetic.

Hence to me if you want more protection on the gears, run the 75W-140.

The clip appeared to have a different shape but goes in the same.

From what I'm told, later models used this new clip design.

Time will tell.

The only problem that I've had with the rear diff was the thrust washers on each clutch pack blew apart and when I caught it, it had torn up the pinion gears and cut almost a 1/4 in groove in the third member housing.
