OK.

It's a VERY SIMPLE linkage. What happens when you move the lever? Does it feel attached to anything or does it just "flop" around?

Can you crawl under the truck and manually shift it?

Default 2000 dakota v8 4x4 won't shift into 4 wd

4wd shift lever on floor left side of hump. but underneath the truck the linkage seems to be on the passenger side of the transfer case. so i sprayed some lubricant. n ordered a new linkage with couple of new rubber bushing. Because the 4wd shift lever seemed to only more a hair then hung up n just prying it one way or the other a lil bit, but not enough to do anything. i must get under there n try to move it with a long pair of needle nose pliers i guess.

to tell u the truth , i really don't think its moving at all. just plain old stuck. i'm afraid if i yank on it too hard, i might break something.

i guess if i don't shift into 4wd, its just like owning a 2wd truck with more gears, weight, n taller shocks

Make sure the brake is set and/or chock the tires. Put the transmission in neutral THEN try to shift the transfer case. That takes any stress from the driveline off of the system.

Don't be afraid of giving it some force.

Here's a picture of the linkage.

Default 4x4, now something else...

Yeah! 4wd in snow. Wow. Feels great with all my fluids in check. Oil atf+4 in tranny n transfer case. Linkage missing bushings, but sprayed it at all connection points. Now works even without it in neutral. Shift on the fly feels great. But now something else. Because I teaces intermediate shaft. Between steering column n power steering motor. It disconnected at cvs n steering wheel spun freely. Now I lost my cruise control. N my air bag light comes on. What to do? Pull steering wheel n unwind then reconnect everything?

Yeah the bushings wear out after a while. Glad you have the 4wd working.

Nothing to rewind. Your clockspring is destroyed, guaranteed. It happened when the steering wheel spun. Need a new one.

It connects the buttons for cruise, the drivers airbag, and the horn.

Yes, your horn is dead too.

Disconnect the battery for at least 2 minutes before you pull the airbag. It's not a difficult job once you pull the wheel.

Somebody correct me, but aren't you supposed to use 80-90 gear oil in the T case? I know we do at work for the NP231's....

Nope.

From the FSM: Recommended lubricant for the NV231 transfer
case is Mopart Dexron III, or ATF+3, type 7176. Approximate lubricant fill capacity is 1.2 liters (2.5 pints).
