Default alternators

My previous vehicle was an '87 toyota van, the factory alternators would last for maybe 140k but then the rebuilt ones (no new ones available) would only last 15-30K. After being stranded in the wilds of Montana for a few days with a dead alternator, I took to carrying a spare.

What can I expect alternator-wise with the 2004 DAK?

thanks, Al

i have had a 2001 dak, for about 3 years no trouble with the alternator. i think its the factory one. new subject: if you have an auto trans. there is an external fluid filter. i f the trany is clean on the inside put this on. go to auto zone get 2210 magna-fine. it is an external filter. 3/8 tube size. use high pressure hose, NOT fuel hose. you will need to cut some steel tubing. if you dont know how , get your mechanic to do it.

I replaced my alternator 25k ago and it was the original one with almost 225k on it. I have the 2.5 though.

I replaced my alternator back in June. My truck is 12 years old and had 151,000 miles on it when I swapped out the alternator. I did not do it because it was not charging or because it was causing any problems with my electrical system. I changed it out because the alternator pulley shaft had more play in it than I was comfortable with. It also did not spin as smoothly as I would have liked. The alternator was still working OK but I just replaced it as preventative maintenance. I used a BBB remanned alternator from Advance, used an online discount code and saved $50.00 on it.

If you live near a decent sized town get a used OEM one and have it rebuilt by a elec motor shop. I dont buy rebuilts from the parts house. Nightmare with 3 chevy ones in the past

Default Rebuilt always suck

Rebuilt always suck don’t know why but you’re lucky if they last 2 years I don’t understand why that is but it is.

Reading this now makes me want to get a Junker back up just to be safe found two in a local junkyard for $25 so I’m snagging me one and keeping it as a backup my Dakota is getting kind of old 14 years.

Well there are no alternator/starter rebuilders or auto electric shops around here where I live. I checked on it before buying my new alternator. No matter what brand you pick, almost all new alternators are all made in China. I think the only one that is not is Bosch, and I am not spending $350.00 for a Bosch alternator on a 12 year old 152,000 mile truck. BBB alternators are rebuilt at the BBB factory in Mexico. Autozone Duralast come from the same factory. So do the Napa rebuilt alternators. I am not sure about Car Quest but their prices are so high it does not matter anyway. No matter which of the stores you buy from, whether it is Napa, Auto Zone or Advance, the alternators all come from the same BBB factory. The only difference is the label on the box. Advance and Auto Zone both even use the same part number. I read and participated in a post on another forum where a guy who is a District Manager for Napa gave us some info on the Napa new and remanned alternators. The rebuilt ones are much better quality and the new ones from China have twice the failure rate than the BBB alternators.

I replaced the alternator on my '99 3.9 Dak at 80,000 miles with a new unit, not rebuilt, from Advance. This one is dying now also. Not too happy with that.
