Changing ATF and Rear Dif Oil
Hey guys,
Gonna be changing out the tranny fluid in my auto soon, in 10 years I dont think it has ever been changed but mine you my truck is extremely low mileage. It's shifting harder and clunking when warmed up so I don't think the fluid is any good anymore. It's hard to tell cause it's still nice and red but the truck is 10 years old. I plan on just dropping the pan and changing the filter, I realize I wont get it all out but I am 100% against flushing the system cause that's how I killed my last car. Think I should actually change it and if so should I add that Lucas stuff?
On another note, gonna be changing the rear dif oil. I have the 8.25 LSD rear end and I have the oil, just haven't gotten the additive yet. I will go with the little bottle of Mopar LSD additive from the dealer but I'm just not sure how much additive to put in. Do I dump the whole bottle or does someone have an estimated amount for me?
Thanks.

I'm not a believer in additives. Change the fluid and filter, then drive it a bit and see how it goes. The problem with additives is that they'll go after all the seals, not just any that are starting to wear. If you really do have a problem there is only one fix, a rebuild.
Both the 8 1/4 and 9 1/4 take about 5 ounces of the Trak-Lok additive.

Thanks Dan,
Sorry to bring this up but I am gonna drop the pan and change the filter, but just when it comes down to the type of fluid. Any type of ATF +4 should be fine right?
Canadian Tire carries ATF +4 by Motomaster(Canadian Tire's specialty brand) and I'm thinking that one 5L jug should be enough, ofcourse I'll measure how much comes out of the pan and filter and put the correct amount in (should be less than 5L right?)
I just wanna make sure that there isn't any specific type of ATF +4 for the 42RE tranny.
Thanks!

I think it takes about 4 liters if you drop the pan. I'd suggest you get the filters from the dealer. While not really a big issue on the 42re, which you should have, the 45rfe seems to have issues with other filters not fitting properly.
As long as the ATF meets the spec you should be fine.

Just got everything I need, I got the Mopar Friction Modifier... $10.95 for the 4 oz bottle - ouch.
I went with Mobile Superior ATF+4 - it says it's designed for Chrysler's and meets the 9602 type (what my manual says). So hopefully all will be good when it comes to dropping the pan and changing the rear dif fluid.
Thanks for the help Dan!
