Default My latest dumb question, oil/filter related

I've purchased the XG16 and read on the box "USE WITH FULL SYNTHETIC OIL".

Well, I didn't plan on using full synthetic. With now 205,000 miles and not having used it, I figured I didn't need it. Come to think of it, since I've been using regular Fram filters and other mid priced ones those 205K miles, I wonder if I should even bother with the XG grade.

Can I use the XG filter with standard oil?

What will happen if I use standard oil?

Are the synthetic particles much smaller in the oil and filter, so the standard oil will not flow well through the filter?

My question that many have known the answer to since the synthetics came out. NOT ME!!!

Thanks in advance,
Robb

Exclamation

If you used Dino oil you have sludge unless you used a quality regular oil even then you have sludge I recommend changing to synthetic and use mmo for the next two years to clean it out.

On the filter don’t know? I think it’s a recommendation only

They say that because they claim it holds more dirt than a standard filter, which would be useful if you were following the extended drain intervals common with synthetic oil. Nothing will "happen" if you use it with conventional oil. You might just be spending a couple of bucks more for something you don't really need.

As far as the anti-Fram sentiment goes, use whatever works for you. Yes, Fram filters are not made as well as some other brands. But they do the job. And if they've been working for you for 200k+ miles, I don't see any reason to change.

Default Appreciate y'all

Some really great replies!

Thanks y'all.

As for Fram being crap, sure, most of their filters are. Check out this extensive study to find the XG to be the best when rated (and weighted) over several categories. I'm not going by commercials or claims on the packages, the tests seem pretty reliable.

check out:

Then this page if you missed it:

The XG is sold at Wal-Mart if you want to test drive it.

Like I said, Thanks for the input... maybe I will change to synthetic... maybe

Just my .02, I run the cheapest filters I can find, usually fram if I'm at wally world. As long as you change your oil regularly a fisher price filter would do the trick(just bought 3 dozen filters from a local parts store on sale for .57/each, I'm set for a while)

i have been using a purolator psl14670 for my 2001 dak V6 3.9. it s synthetic filter it works very good with valvoline premium blue, diesel engine oil 15w-40 SAE. this oil is a factory fill for the dodge cummins diesel engine. been using premium blue for 3 years, the purolator synthetic filter for about 7-8 mo. i think they will have filters for other engines. the guys at BITOG think that the filter is a good one.

Synthetic is mostly just to keep the higher mileage vehicles well lubricated and seals soft and in good condition. As far as the whole fram thing goes I ran them on our 95 grandcherokee since it was new. I sold it last year with 216k on it and was still using frams. Same goes with our 04 grand has had frams on it since new and its at 110k now. They are fine for gas vehicles.
