Default Transmission I D

Hi guys, I'm brand new on this Forum, and I'm looking for help. I own a 1998 Dodge Dakota Sport,2.5l, 5speed shift. Last night, after driving about an hour, suddenly I had major difficulty shifting. It didn't want to go into any gear. I left it in reverse and let it cool for an hour. I was able to get it home (7 miles) I can put it into any gear with the motor off, and then start the truck and let the clutch out. I think I need to change the trans. fluid. The mileage is 198k and I got it at about 130k. I don't know which tranny I have, whether it's the AX15 or the NV3500. Both use different fluid. Is there a quick way of finding out?

simplest way is to go here http://www.dodge.com/wccsapp/universal/D/index.jsp fill out the form.. ASK THEM FOR A BUILD SHEET. it will list exactly what transmission came in the vehicle (and everything else) at the time of build.

YOU WILL NEED YOUR VIN NUMBER. i did this 2 weeks ago, gave them the information they asked for, but also typed the FULL VIN number in the addition information section.

You'll have the AX-15.

It could be your clutch. It's hydraulic and if it fails you will have trouble getting it into gear. Basically, it's probably not releasing all the way.

2.5 liter will have the ax15 behind it, as 00Dak stated.
