Default 4X4 wont engage? Advise please

Just tried to engage my 4X4 and realized the 4WD light wont lite and it is obvious the diff is not engaging.

1997 V8

Are there any electrical devises that would cause this that I can look at?

Better than stuck in 4X4

TIA, Paul

You have the electronic 4wd I take it?

It's a chronic problem. And yeah, it's the transfer case module that needs to be replaced. It's like $300 at the dealer. That's the 1 item I REALLY wished that wasn't on my truck. Guess what. Mine failed a month after getting the truck.

Unfortunately you can't convert the tcase to a manual one, the only way to permanently fix the problem is to swap a completely different t-case in and pop a hole for the shifter.

I try to engage 4wd at least once a month to keep everything lubed up.

Appreciate your reponse!

It seems to go into 4low with no problem? I just cant tell if it is engaging in 4H, except when I back up in reverse, it seems to feel as though it does.

There is no WAY to see the light indicator during day time! They really should have put an in-dash indicator in.

Anyone know where the module is located? I looked at a shop manual, but there was no section on this item?

I have a 2001 QC 4x4 with the electronic transfer case. My thinking is that if it goes into 4lo it should work for 4hi as well. You could jack the truck up on blocks to find out for sure right?

First of all, do you have electronic 4x4 flyboy? I'm not sure, but I think that will make a big difference with the help you're getting. Horatio and Brian, by electronic do you mean push button 4x4? I'm just curious if you guys are all on the same page. I don't know if that was an option in his 97.

No, I have a manual shifter. I'm thinking just the indicator light has gone out? I have the Dodge extended warranty and she goes in tomorrow for a checkup.

AH.
Interesting. If it's a manual lever then it should go in.

By electric I mean twist-****. I like levers. Electric things break easier.

Default Switch and more!

Well it was in fact a switch...$103.28. In addition, my upper ball joints need replacing. So I'm told. This was suppose to be done last May from the dealer I purchased it from. $470.00 for these!

Upper ball joints, as in the recalled ones? Might check into that.

No recall on the 97 model year. At least that's what I'm told and could'nt find it on the net either.
