my guess is a valve cover gasket, or maybe a head gasket.

Here's an old trick that aviation mechnics use. You can use it for all liquid leaks, not just oil:

Clean the suspect area with a steam cleaner, or degreser. Allow time for the parts to dry. Apply a liberal quantity of talc powder around the suspect area. Drive the vehicle for an hour, or two. Immediatly after driving, look for "lines" of wet spots in the talc powder. Treat those lines like "arrows"; they will point you directly to the source of your leak. If the "line" ends, try again, but move apply more talc powder beyond where the line ended. Works like a charm!

i am on vacation, i don't have talc to try. the leak is right from the top of the filter, not a head or valve cover

Not sure about your motor. But were the filter screws in may be just a adapter plate. In that case there be a gasket behind it.

I'm not familiar with your engine, but is there an oil pressure switch above your filter? Those have been known to leak.

Maybe you can clean it up, run it for a few minutes, then see if it has oil coming out of it?

i have cleaned it up a few times, i only get a drip coming off the filter. i tied a rag on top of the filter and it stayed dry till the rag soaked.
