Default rear differential going out

So I believe my rear end is going out on my dakota. Its the 9 1/4 non posi with 3.55 gears. I'm trying to find out what is an affordable option and what rear ends will fit my truck. I would like to go to a limited slip rear end. I need to stay with the 3.55 gears as my truck is 4wd and I use it on a daily basis. It makes a whining sound when driving down the road then makes a growling sound when coasting or engine breaking.

Sounds like a bad pinion bearing. If it is, your best option would be to just replace the bearings, instead of buying a whole rear end. Then, you could also install an aftermarket limited-slip at the same time, if you want.

Looks like about the least expensive option is the OE Trac-Loc.

What's your thoughts on the chrysler sure grip rear ends? I've got one found with 48,000 miles for 210. Worth it or should I just do it right the first time and rebuild mine.

I'm not really familiar with the Sure Grip. I have seen some broken Trac-Locs (mostly with bad clutches, but also some broken spider gears), but I'm not sure how the Sure Grip is different. Sounds like a pretty screaming deal you found, though. You can't even come close to buying a new posi carrier for that, and the labor is probably easier to change the whole rear end.

Ive got the same issue with my 01 dak 4.7 2wd... Im rebuilding mine. I can get the rebuild kit for under $100 and a machine shop will do the pressing and cleaning for me for $50... I just have to pull it and deliver... which is no big deal. (perks to working for Midas automotive....) all should take about 3 hours...
