Default Holy Shat

I mentioned in a previous post that I had a brake fluid leak. This weekend I had time to search for it which didn't take me long. The culprit was the wheel cylinder on the driver side. After I popped off the tire and the drum I noticed that I had zero brakes left on the shoe. Took off the passenger side and noticed I had plenty of material left on that shoe. My truck has extremely low mileage (55,000 kms) so I was surprised to see that. My driver side must be sticking.

Getting to my holy shat story. I wanted to see if I had any braking in the driver side rear so I put my tires back on and asked my father to sit in he truck with it in drive. (This whole time the rear is on axle stands) as soon as he put it in drive the tires started to spin quickly... my guess was because there was no load on the tires but then all of a sudden the truck just took off and this caused it to almost hop on the axle stands. The truck jolted and in a panic my father threw it in park and I heard a terrible grind.

So far I don't think the tranny is damaged cause its driving fine , but I can't figure out why the hell the truck took off like that. He wasn't hitting the gas at all.

Scared us pretty good cause j certainly wasn't expecting that. Any ideas?

The grinding noise was likely the parking sprawl trying to engage. It shouldn't have damaged the transmission.

Once the wheels started moving it was probably just momentum that made things seem to happen fast. I wouldn't worry about. You weren't expecting it so it made it seem worse.

Fix the cylinder and replace the shoes.

They spun quickly at first which is what I expected. It's when the truck seemed to floor itself which scared us. I was thinking either the parking pin or reverse gear cause you do have to go back through reverse.

Brakes will hopefully be fixed tonight.

Sounds like you are talking about the front not the rear cylinder correct?

Then replace the complete caliper to be safe as it could be the culprit

Just noticed you do say the rear replace everything all the springs so on to be safe.

Be very careful removing the cylinder and putting it back on as you can snap the brake line if not careful

I'm replacing the cylinder and shoes on the rear driver side yes.

Called the dealer and they want $73 for the cylinder lol.

That means I have to wait for my local auto store to order it in for Friday at which I'll get for 11.99

Oh dealership , you're funny.

Dealer what a joke thats 5X what Autozone has them for.

Look carefuly for anything bent or looks weird out of place as the back brakes usualy dont do that and only 55K is a very short life for them.

Something is wrong

You may as well get both done you will have the shoes

Dont forget 2 or 3 cans of brake cleaner

Passenger side shoes are fine.

Drivers are done.

Replacing driver side shoes and cylinder.

Dakaz,

I think my parking brake had something to do with it. It doesn't work so I'm assuming someone hit it and it never released.. certainly never felt like it was still grabbing.

Sorry I misread this as front and back brakes.

Yes I will be replacing all shoes. Both on the driver and passenger side, but only one cylinder.
