neat read

Couple of friends had to fight a wheel nut once, wouldn't break loose, broke 2 breaker bars with cheater bar extentions. Then they got smart. Said it picked the whole front of the car of at first, but both of them got on top of the engine, and it finally broke the nut loose.

I'm misunderstood. I thought you were saying you had to torque the 3 bolts holding the hub on.

I did torque the axle nut properly.

So I figured Id add a reply to my original post to say that I'm replaced both hubs with Timkens and torqued them properly but I am still getting a noise. I've also tried rotating the tires.

Can't it when you're rolling slowly or at highway speeds. Only when you're driving at city speeds or coasting.

I have noticed a bit of a clunk while turning from a dead stop but it doesn't happen all the time. Im thinking that hasomething to do with the steering shaft or possibly the CV joints.

The boots aren't ripped or leaking but I'm wondering if the noises could be related

Any suggestions?

Have you checked your front driveshaft? How does the CV joint look on that?

Oh sheesh just realising how many spelling and grammar mistakes there are in that post. Sorry I'm on mobile.

Tom, are you referring to the inner CV joint? Or did you mean the U joint on the driveshaft? I'm not sure what you mean by CV joint on the driveshaft.

IIRC The driveshaft to X-fer case is a CV, not a UJ.

Yup, this is what I was thinking. And they are prone to failure.

The offending part (if you have one) looks like this:

Okay great, thanks for the pic Tom.

To me it sounds like its coming from the driver side which is why I originally thought wheel hubs.

How would I test to see if its bad?

It's usually pretty obvious if it's bad, but grab a hold of it and try to shake it, like you would check for a bad u-joint. Also check for little flakes of metal or rust coming out of it. If you think it's bad but you're not sure, take the front driveshaft out and see if the noise goes away.

Okay great - I have some time tomorrow so that's what I'll do.

I'll be fine driving without the front driveshaft(if I can't tell) as long as its not in 4 right?
