Default 2004 dakota Transmission fluid question

Hey guys i have a 2004 dodge dakota 4x4 4.7 qc with 545rfe 5 speed auto that my step mom bought brand new. The tranny pan started to leak the other day so i got a diiferent one. I also got a bunch of atf+4 and a pan gasket and trany filter kit. My question is after everthing is put back togeather, when i got to add fluid do i fill with the 5.5 quarts, drive it, then top it off or is there some kinda procedure for it to be done correctly? Thanks

The hard part, doing a drain and fill, is figuring out how much to put in. I usually put in enough to bring it to full, not running. Start it and fill it until "full." Then shift it through all the ranges a few times, checking the level, then going for a ride, and topping it off again.

I'd rather not overfill it. It won't really ever run dry this way so I'm not worried but it's been a while since I've done an auto. Maybe someone else has a better idea.

The book says to put in about 5 quarts at first, then check.

"(2) Add following initial quantity of Mopar® ATF +4 to transmission:
(a) If only fluid and filter were changed, add 10 pints (5 quarts) of ATF +4 to transmission."

ok thanks man thats the way i was gonna try it, i just wanted to be carefull because the more i research the 545 rfe im finding out its a realy complex tranny. Mine has 190,000 and honestly with the step mom having the truck, i think the fluid was changed once at 60,000 or something and thats it

Not sure if it's still an issue, but there have been problems with aftermarket filters not fitting properly, there's two if I remember.

Get them from a dealer.

after you clean the trans. add this to your*chrysler*trans. an external fluid filter
1. go to auto-zone. get 2210, its called a power steering filter, but it is for transs to. it is for 3/8 tubing. by (magna-fine) be sure to use high pressure hose. Reff:http://www.magnafilter.com.au/magna-fine.html*
2. for other sizes wix 58964 5/16 tube size reff:http://www.wixfilters.com/filterlook...sionfilter.asp
