Default How do I check the coolant level?

Just got a ’98 Dakota with 5.2L V8. How do I check thecoolant level? The overflow tank is black and the cap says “See Owner’s Manual”which I didn’t get. Is there a ’89 Dakota Owner’s Manual online? Thanks,

Ken

The tank should have a dipstick to check that

Thanks for the reply. All I have is just a floppy yellow cap on the overflow tank. Looking at the parts diagram I see something called an Indicator, part no. 52028604, but none of the parts suppliers show a picture. Is this like a dip stick and is it attached to the cap or is it just loose in the tank?

I think the only way is to buy a new tank

You could just use a wood dowel look at my dipstick and judge what it should be even if you filled it half full if it did overflow it would just pump the excess out the overflow tube so I don't think you could over fill it even if you tried just go for .25 or .50 full and you should be ok.

Thanks for the pictures, it all makes sense now. Another item for my junk yard visit list.

Actually the Coolant Recovery Tank is the best way to do that not the rad cap but either way works.

If the system is in good shape you should not be adding any coolant in the system you will lose some over time but very little.
