Default Broken Rocker arm/lifter/head

So we have always had over heating issues in this truck. replaced tons of **** on it ...
Dad was driving it one day when it started blowing steam and oil and all sorts of **** from the engine and exhaust....
Quick look showed a hole in the side of the valve cover you could stick your finger into ...

Finally a few months later I get the time to pull the valve cover off (passenger side) and find this on the back passenger side ....

So what do you guys think happen here ? Ive heard once these engines are well known for frying the #8 piston which im guessing is this one.
Not sure how true that is tho ...

Im scared to dig further and pull that head off and see what damage lies under it ...
I get the feeling this engine is toasted ....

This is like an 00 4.7 magnum IIRC.

Looks like you had an oiling problem maybe a weak oil pump or blocked oil passage all your surfaces looked spalled to me but in that pic it’s hard to see

Only my guess but it looks like new engine time.

Actually galling is the word I was thinking of not spalling

the cam wear looks fairly normal to me [but the whole lobe face being shiny makes me wonderon that roller], I don't see any pitting. Looks like it spit out the intake rocker, so at least the motor/short block shouldn't be hurt. I would pull the head and see if the valve tagged the piston. I don't think it did. All I see here is a broken rocker base, possibly from a seized roller.

I seem to recall that intake rockers falling off of the 4.7 was a kinda popular thing?

No telling .. I can sure say that lifter was shooting oil out the hole from the valve cover like no other !
And yes things dont look that clean in there ... but its also sat for some time now too gonna do some more observing. Ill bring more pics soon too.

Its always had a tick, especially on start up it sounds horrid

I think as you pull the head off you will find more than you want to see.

And yes the cam lob looks shinny/galled

The head is trashed that's for sure

00 magnum 4.7 in my moms durango had a similar problem, broken rockers, but hers also slipped the timing chain at 192k. All valves on the left bank met the pistons. The thing also had overheated to red zone before, burned quarts of oil like crazy about every 2 weeks had to add 2+ quarts, clogged the catalitic converter so bad backpressure was high enough to lift the head along with overheating and other problems at the time blowing the head gasket too. Took it to a shop, needed both heads, new cams, pistons, cylinder bore, timing gears on cam and crank. We decided to trade it for a 2010 3.7 dakota.

the 4.7 first run was horrible, the 16tooth tone wheels were the worst of the 4.7.

the lobe looks shiny, but it's not galled. It looks smooth, like the roller was walking across the face as the rocker started breaking loose.

Since it's an intake, the valve shouldn't be able to hit the piston. On the intake stroke, the valve chases the piston as it opens. When valves hit, it's the exhaust because it opens as the piston approaches. So I think the short block is fine, just needs a new head.

Just My Opinion.

things look fine inside. Going to replace the head only....

But

I do need a new part with the timing chain tensioner I managed to break ... anyone know of 4.7s being parted out I could jump on ??
Or the best place to buy a single head
