Default radiator upgrade

2000 Dakota 4.7 with standard cooling. Is the heavy duty radiator (as used in the trailer tow package) a drop-in replacement? I doubt it, so if not what else has to be changed?

Mine works ok but could use some help when towing in the mountains. I do have an aftermarket trans cooler, which works well.

If your upgrading the radiator just go ahead and get an aluminum, 3 row radiator, ditch the clutch fan, and put in a 180 t-stat.

It should drop in just fine. It's a little thicker, that's it.

It's Dodge p/n 52028818AD. It actually fits both the 4.7 and the 5.9.

Thanks for the replies. One other follow-up question: Is there a reason for ditching the fan?

I wouldn't ditch the fan if you're having trouble in the mountains cooling. If you do consider upgrading the electric fan.

Then again, I wouldn't put in a 180 thermostat either but that's just me. The engine was designed for a 195.

Now you've got me thinking. I wonder if the electric fan is working. I'll look into that.

Is your clutch fan working? If you're getting warm it should be roaring.
