3.9 to 4.7 or 5.9 Swap... Save My Dak!
I know.. not another swap thread right? Well I'm debating about fixing my Dak as I love her to death.
Original plan was to swap in a 318 till I realised they weren't offered in 02, but the 4.7 and 5.9 was and Id more then likely run into problems with the 5.2.
Now... I would be replacing the engine and tranny. I know that I will need an engine harness, PCM reflashed, fan shroud etc...
Do any of the accessories ie water pump, AC, power steering bolt on to either of these engines or will I need to find a complete engine.
Do these engines physically fit or will I need new motor mounts?
If I'm going to fix my dak I'm going with a V8. any insight here would be great.
Search function did help but not for everything.
Cheers

My two cents: go with the 5.9. I think you'll find the swap easier than going to a 4.7 just from the electrical standpoint.
Yes, you can use your water pump and some of the other accessories. The 3.9 is basically a chopped 5.2/5.9. While I wouldn't recommend it, you could even bolt up your 42RE to it. Just use the 5.9 flexplate.

Thanks Dan!
The tranny is shot too so I'd be looking for a 46RE to accompany the 360.
Only problem is I'm not sure if I'd need a new driveshaft incase the 46RE is longer/shorter than the 42RE.
Found a 5.9 with about 80k miles thats 3 hrs from me.. no tranny yet tho.

I'm in the process of the same swap....3.9 swap to a 5.9 360
The question I got is if the regular oil pan from the 360 can fit in my Dakota or if ill have to get an rt oil pan??? And what about the oil pickup tube???

I found an 01 Durango 4x4 complete with the 5.9, transmission and driveshafts and I think I'm gonna buy it. It's a part out as it was hit in the rear.
Do I need a PCM from the 01 Durango, or do I need a PCM from a 02 Dakota with a 5.9? I know I'll also need to wire in 2 more injectors if I plan to use my V6 harness.
Can anyone clear up the computer bit for me?
Thanks

You may want to just have a driveshaft shop make them for you as you have a lift on your Dak correct.
Some things are better custom made when it comes to a custom truck.
Sounds all good to me and a bit of fun making it happen

There shouldn't be much of a difference between the '01 and '02 PCM. It's not like the big change from '00 to '01.
Do either of these, the '01 or '02 have security? That might be an issue though.
Otherwise, try it.
