Default Fluid on rear tire?

Any idea what this is? New to anything involving rear axles.

It doesnt seem fresh. I touched the stuff on the tire and it didnt wipe off.

Does it smell like rotten onions? That's gear oil.

Otherwise it could be a leaky caliper.

Check the wheel cylinder too, could be brake fluid.

Looking at it again, it seems to be slightly "damp" near the caliper and then over the brake shield.

Calipers can leak too.

If it's brake fluid, you'll be able to hose it off with plain water. But it looks like gear oil to me.

It was gear oil. that seal was destroyed.

Too bad it took me 4 hours to get the new caliper to stop leaking by the banjo bolt. what a pain in the ***.
