Red face Evap leak code

So I have a P0442 code on an 02 Dakota V6 and I have checked the system from the purge valve to the canister with inspection and starting fluid. No change in engine speed. So all that's left is a flooded canister or bad gas cap, correct??

Is there a way to check the canister??

Could it be a faulty ECM ??

If I clear the code the truck runs fine until the light comes back on, then it is sluggish with poor MPG.

Thank you all for any input!!

I know my cap failed state inspection, but i put it back on because it's a locking type....honestly, I've never felt a performance hit due to it.

When I had that code it was a bad Evap Systems Leak Detection Pump. But I had been in a wreck which broke the pump somehow, it is mounted on the bottom of the battery tray and I was hit in the left front corner...Try a new gas cap first, much cheaper and less trouble. I bought a Stant cap at Advance, it works fine and cost way less than OEM Mopar.
