More research has led me to question the timing chain tensioner... do our trucks use a plastic chain tensioner?

Found a thread on a jeep forum that sounded exactly like mine. He pulled his cover off and found 2 plastic pieces sitting there.

Replaced that and no more rattling.

Could this he a possibility? I thought that the noise disappeared slightly under throttle.

Cheers

It is a possibility. It's nylon but can wear out.

Is the noise coming from the front of the engine?

Definitely the front, but sounds more like cylinder 1/3.

Sticking your head in the driver side wheel well you can hear the noise the loudest.

Thanks

Got a call back from my mechanic - certainly wasn't what I was expected, but Brian you called it.

It was my fault - apparently I didn't tighten the torque converter bolts enough so he pulled the inspection cover and applied locktite and tightened them back up.

What a relief to hear that. This weekend I'm going to spend the time retightening everything I can think of.

I feel silly for not doing enough diagnosis myself... I just panicked thinking it was a problem with the engine I just replaced.

Kind of glad I decided to have it towed... I'm thinking driving it with loose torque converter bolts could cause some serious damage.

Thanks for your help!

Whew!

Just be careful you don't over tighten things. Stripping or breaking a bolt could be just as bad as a loose one.

Glad to hear things will be ok just a small setback

With everything you did a good long inspection would be a good thing to do I recommend checking those sparkplugs or replacing them.

I know this topic has been beat to death but what type and brand of spark plugs are best for the 3.9? Copper? Platinum?

Please take note that the highly popular Autolites do not seem to be avail locally in Canada... at least in my area.

I'm looking at Champions, NGK, Bosch...

Which are OEM?

THANK YA!
