98 cruise control
Ha I bet you all thought I was done!! Never give up. I now have 2 cruise controls, and 3 camper shells. persistence does pay
I was discouraged and I decided to order a Rostra cruise, and take back the junk yard parts for yard credit. The Rostra cruise arrived today, but I am planning on returning it. IF????
As a last ditch chance. I called another auto computer store that was recommended on the jeep forum. This fellow said absolutely no problem to get the cruise working. He took my COMPUTERS part #, not the VIN. looked it up and cross referenced the computer program on my computer to a PROGRAM that had cruise that fit my computer. He said he could sell me a remanned computer for $200 delivered, or he could re-program my computer for $115 plus shipping and a 2 day turn around with FEDEX next day air, == ( very close to $200)
So I called the Dealership and told them this story. The service manager says Well yes he can do that since I gave him the part # for the computer program. He then said BUT He can not guarantee it will work, and it might permanently disable my vehicle, and he won't be responsible, blah blah blah, and that if I want him to do it, it will cost $115, and that I should bring a spare computer just in case he ruins mine.
Then we got into it a bit because he said that I told dodge that he was not helpful, and Dodge called him and said I complained. I said I did not really complain but I was NOt happy with the service I received, or did not receive..
I ordered the new computer for $200. It should arrive when I get home from Thanksgiving, The computer man said he guaranteed it, and it would be plug and play and I did not even have to disconnect my battery.
So I will be sure to report next week

Just unhook the connectors and switch PCM's. battery can stay connected. I had to fight the connector locks on mine....not sure why.
yes the computer salesman was very good. He said that if I had a '98 running an original computer, I was on borrowed time. Then with me paying shipping to have my old computer re-programmed and still be old. versus Free shipping on the new computer, The price difference was negligible, So I got the new computer. PLUS there should be no 2 or 3 day down time waiting on my old computer to make the round trip.
I just got home from work, and the guaranteed plug and play re-built PCM, DID NOT enable the cruise control. I called the salesman, and he told me I need to have my computer flashed. So much for plug and play. What a bunch of crap. I told the computer people I had to go to work for 6 weeks, and they said they would guarantee the computer to work. Now they are trying to not give me my money back. I am pretty close to giving up
I really can't or won't go back to my local dealers, after my last run ins with both of the local dealers.
So What DRB scan tool is needed for the '98 Dakota. I am pretty sure a DRBIII will not work.
anybody have the info on which years which DRB's are good for? I really don't want to spend another $125 for a computer flash especially if it does not work. I think I am pretty close to the most expensive cruise control in history. So far I am in it for about $300 or a little more.
Does anyone know of a DRB that will work on the '98 that can be rented???, or someone that might be able to flash my new computer for a reasonable price?
thanks

The DRB will connect to your truck, with the appropriate modules.
I still find it hard to believe that there is such a difference between later model PCM's.
If it was a 2000 I'd suggest trying this. Take it to another dealer. Just tell them the cruise control isn't working and leave it at that.
They should then put it on their DRB. They can then test all parts of the system, from the switches to the servo.
You can also rent one here: http://www.networkvehicle.com/DRB_III_Rental_2.html

hi all, I went to a rural dealer near my pops house and asked them to flash the pcm for cruise. he hooked it up and said the cruise was enabled. so still no CC.. But very pleasant to deal with compared to my local dealer , and the charge was only $20 for the computer flash which would have cost me $125 at home.
Also I don't even get a dash light that the cruise has power. I looked at another post about cruise troubleshooting but it was for a 2004. I think they are different than mine.
I pulled my junkyard CC on/off set switch, and checked it for resistance. no buttons pushed I get 20.5Kohm, on/off button pushed 458.8 ohm, set button pushed 4332ohms. Any ideas if that is correct????
For a recap. I have a 1998 Dakota sport with a 3.9L v-6. 5 speed manual trans. I have junkyard 1999 cruise switches and servo from a small v-8 truck auto, a brand new clock spring from rock auto. And a remanned PCM that supposedly has the cruise activated as verified by the dealers DRB tool. Also I did not change the brake switch because mine says Speed control on the side of my brake switch. I do have a 1999 cruise brake switch from the same junkyard truck, but the electrical plug is different than my 98, so I have not changed switches yet.
I hope I have a problem somewhere in the switches or the servo. BUT I don't get a dash light to even know if the computer is working. The dealer said there was no way to test the switches with the DRB if I understood correctly.
The pic is of the installed brake switch

I wonder if the problem is the brake switch. Even though the cruise is powered off the pcm it still may need input from the brake switch to turn on or off. I know my Rostra cruise has an input from the brake switch. If the brake is on the cruise will not turn on. If i am using the cruise and i step on the brakes the cruise instantly disengages. I would say find the wiring info and splice in the brake switch from the donor truck....
