These are your possible causes

Coil
Crank Angle Sensor (CKP)
Distributor Sync
Powertrain Control Module (PCM)
Wiring Harness

are your injectors pulsing while cranking.

Vehicle Application: 1998 B1500 3.9 1999 Dakota 3.9 1997 Dakota 3.9 1998 Ram 1500 3.9 1998 Dakota 3.9 Customer Concern: No start, no spark

Average Reported Mileage: 133909
Tests/Procedures: 1. Scope the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor. The CKP sensor should output a consistent 0-5 volt square wave signal.

2. If it will not act up, try tapping on the CKP sensor, with the engine running, to see if it affects the way the engine is running.

3. Test the power and ground control at the coil with the Automatic Test Mode (ATM) tests during the no start. The power should be constant and the ground will cycle on/off every second during the test.

Assuming the coil is good then you could have a bad PCM or ASD relay.

The ASD relay feeds the coil, the PCM grounds it.

Your PCM can be bad. The ASD relay can be bad - corroded contacts.

Lets try this again. Forum is not working on iPad.

I'm 1800 miles from my truck, else I would measure ,y coil. Either the primary voltage is too low, or the windings have failed and the resistances and inductances are not ideal for voltage amplification.

Do you have an ohm meter? If so, check your coil. There are two manufacturers:

Diamond. Primary resistance: 0.97-1.18 ohms. Secondary: 11,300-15,300 ohms.
Toyodenso. Primary resistance: 0.95-1.20 ohms. Secondary: 11,300-13,300 ohms.

If the readings appear at all questionable, change it. They aren't that expensive. Make sure all connections are clean and tight, not corroded - including the ground.

After that, PCM or ASD relay. I'd start with the ASD relay.
