Default Transmission help please!

2003 dakota 4x4 4.7L

So I was driving on some rough terrain and something hit my trans oil pan and punctured a hole in it. I didn't notice right away, drove about 100 ft and it would no longer move at all so I got out and noticed the big trail of red.

Got all the tools needed and I changed the trans oil pan on the ground (in the snow of course...) We slowly added fluid while checking it, and ended up putting 7 bottles of the dodge fluid (at4) in it.

So while driving home it feels like it has hardly any power off a start, and I notice it doesn't seem like it is shifting. I know it won't go in to 4th or 5th gear anymore since I got it up to 110km/h and it was still in third. (I'm thinking maybe it is stuck in third that is why its slow off the start?)

When we got home I checked the fluid again and it is no longer reading on the stick. So how much fluid do these trucks take in a case like this? I will have to wait for the dealer to open again, then add some more and see if it gets any better.

wonder if you ran the torque converter dry.. sounds like you need to add more fluid.

my Haynes manual says 9 to 11 quarts for a dry fill depending on options.

Would that make sense for why it's not shifting into the last couple gears? It was 3000 rpm at 110 when it should be 1600

Yes, it can explain it not shifting properly. Top off the fluids, cycle it in all the gears (including reverse) a few times to allow it to work any air out, recheck and then take it for a test drive.
