Are you in neutral and stopped when you switch in an out of 4Lo? Because I know you can do 2wd-->4Hi on the fly at speeds up to 35mph, but 4Lo requires the truck be at a stand still. To answer your question about is this a Dakota thing, probably no, I haven't heard it before and the transfer case used in your set up is used in other vehicles as well.

I hope this helps

Yes switch it to 4wd Hi first and then once it engages, from Neutral and stopped flip it to 4LO.

ya... tried it .. even with motor off.. sometime that work but most of the time it just shift in and out when it wants .. i would have to say that getting it out of 4lo is hard than it going in to 4lo...what really gets me is that 2wd to 4hi is like butter..i've asked other guy's around here about there truck doing the same.. but all most all of them said they never use 4lo..don't know?? i can deal with it ..just would be nice to have it shift in and out better ..thanks for the info

start debugging the wiring harness. Either the TCCM is getting a delayed signal from the switch, or the motor is getting a delayed signal from the TCCM, or the motor is bad.

Yeah 4-lo is a must when pulling heavy stuff offroad. It's much better on your transmission and all.

Try shifting the tranny into neutral doing about 2-3 mph, then shift the t-case into 4 lo. You should be moving to engage or disengage the t-case.

To shift back to 2-hi, slow down to 2-3 mph, shift tranny to neutral, and shift the t-case to 2-hi. The shift fork might worn out, or even chain stretch.

I'm new here, but not to jeeps and mopars. The nv 231 series has been around a long time, and is pretty solid.
