Default getting locked up

Swung by the gear shop and had this ordered. He said it's the only one that they make spare parts for...he figures that being a DD, i'll probably trash the thing in 2-3 years (by then, is will be a race-only truck...maybe) and that will make it cheaper to rebuild.

Since I have the 4.10's, carrier has to come out and ring gear removed to get cross pin out. He figures 2.5-3 hours of labor at $110.00/hr.

This is a DIY type thing.
Your not taking the pinion out. Just the carrier.
Remember what shims went where and pull it out yourself.
This is not a hard job.

Better than $330 Labour plus shop supplies (rags) and taxs and and and....
If you have the $500 just laying around loose then go ahead.
But its something you can do in the driveway with hand tools in three hours.

I have the 4.10's, so the ring gear has to come off on the 8.25 to get the cross-pin out. Otherwise I would!

He does our race axle stuff and is Mercedes & Lexus Factory certified, and runs one of the biggest off road shops in texas. I have no problem paying him what he wants.

The Lock-Rite is a pretty strong unit. Not as strong as a full carrier, but not bad. I'm curious, though. If the carrier has to come out and the ring gear has to come off anyway, why not just drop a little more coin and get a Detroit or a Grizzly (Yukon)?

If you do much off-roading, it's helpful to have a locker. If you're drag racing, it will make your launches much more consistent if you can reduce or eliminate wheelspin.

this. Right now I'm chipping at 1800 and breaking the right rear loose instantly. The convertor flashes past 3,000 and the goal is to leave on a 2300-2500 chip.

And because going to a full carrier locker requires re-setting up the gears and a likely modified gear mesh pattern. Even though the gears only have 15,000 miles or so on them, still would be too much change to flip carriers and cause a mesh change.

You don't have to touch the pinion. As long as you set the backlash back to where it was when you started, the pattern won't change.

No big deal, though. Like I said, the Lock-Rite is a good unit. I doubt you'll break it.

the truck is only going to be on the street for 1.5-2 years at the most. Once I get a decent job and can afford an eco-mileage daily truck, this thing will probably get relegated to race-only. But who knows. I'm only getting about 10-11 MPG around town right now i think...I haven't ran a mileage check in forever. Mostly from my heavy right foot. I want to either ladder-bar or 4 link it....Ladder bar is easier but 4 link would really be better.

had it thrown in today. $330 for the locker, $20 to have it shipped to the shop, and $250 labor/shop costs for 3 hours of labor (normally $110/hr but we have a good working relationship & he knows i'm a student). $600 total.

My truck behaves like a totally different animal now. Has torque steer to the left decking it at 55 even counteracting my poor alignment that pulls right. Can feel it locking/unlocking when the transmission shifts, kicks the back end around a good bit. I can't even hear it clicking, but i can feel it going in and out. Decked it from idle from a stop sign on dry asphalt and left 2 very small marks to make sure it's working. Still have to see if it will hold stall on the convertor or if i'll have to play with the 2 step some.
