Default NV3500 rebuild question

I'm in the process of replacing a broken reverse shift fork on the NV3500 out of my 99 Dak 4X4. I have followed all of the directions in the FSM and have gotten really close to getting to the shift fork. I've gotten as far as taking the shift shaft out, but can't get the rest of the gear train out. According to the FSM I am supposed to use a special tool to hold everything together while removing it, and I was going to attempt to remove it without the tool since I'm not a transmission builder and will only use it this one time. But it feels like everything is still held in by a hidden bolt or something. Anyone know how I can get to the reverse/5th shift fork from here?

According to the FSM it should be ready to come out. And there are no more instructions after this in the FSM. It just starts into the next set of instructions for the 2WD version.

I transmission is nothing to have at unless you have the knowledge and special tools to fix it.

Otherwise you are in for hell

I completely agree. I wold NEVER try this on my own. But I have the help of a buddy who builds manual transmissions for a living and he's been helping me through this. He has just never worked on this particular tranny before. He mainly builds 18 speed manual transmissions for big rigs.

I have to wait on parts to come in the mail anyway, so I just need to figure out this one step before they get here.

Just in case anyone searches this in the future I figured I'd post the steps that the FSM leaves out.

You have to remove the output shaft seal to get to a hidden bearing retainer c clip that is identical to the one on the input shaft. For some reason the input shaft one is listed in the FSM and the output shaft c clip isn't. You will need a new and seal.
