I have to put new tires on my truck again.

2004 Dakota SLT 4WD. Red. Live in Minnesota
Believe it or not, Only 85,000 miles and not looking to get rid of it for about 4 years. Then the wifes car will be paid off


I have had 2 sets of Goodyear SRA with 4 treads lines. I like them, but want to know if there are better alternatives.

My wants: White letter. Quiet ride. Around $175.00

Looking for suggestions.
What did you like? Why.
Cost comparison.
Good place to buy them

They are on the the 16" stock rims.


But looking for 17-18" rims if the wife will let me.
suggestions there too- around $120 a rim.

I will probably do this in the next few weeks, when I am feeling better. Can't drive for 6 weeks because of surgery.
If time gets away from me, then it will be September when it starts to snow again. This is Minnesota.

p.s. Had the Brake lights, engine light go on, then the speedometer and odometer quit the other day. A quick forum search led me to the speed sensor. It was nice to go into the mechanic and tell them what was wrong. Thanks forum.

 

I got a set of Firestone Destination A/Ts a couple months ago and I'm very happy with them both on and off the road.

 

general grabber at2's are some really bad *** tires, and they are fairly cheap.

 

Generally all A/Ts are nice and well built now. I own a set of Discoverer A/T3, they are some ridiculous nice tires. The total cost was about $712 with install. I like them a lot, on road they are solid and easy to drive. Off-road/in severe weather they are predictable and always have grip. Off-road was actually where they will stand out, you can tear around dirt, light mud, gravel, soft terrain in 2wd. Only when I hit deep snow, mud, steep inclines and foot deep water do I use 4wd.

Two notes:
1) The tire dealers pay about 135-145 per tire for the A/T3s

2) A/T3s are hard compound tires, it takes about 100 miles to break them in (if you drive like me). Also they work better the longer your driving, so on the highway they are great and fairly quiet. They are quieter than my exhaust at least

About Rims, they are a whole nother field. Now I'm highly biased. If I were to suggest rims it would be Konig rims, they only have one type for trucks which are Lock n' Loads. They are black and "chromed" but come in stock sizes for us. I have preference for them because they are designed to be lighter then standard by using high quality metal and engineering. But because of that they might be out of your price range, they average $160 a rim

Just posted a pic of my Dakota with new Goodyear Adventure a/t with kevlar. They seem to have gotten good reviews by multiple sources...

 

I really liked the bfg a/ts on my 98 but thats a little bit out of your price range. 16's seem to be just as expensive as 17, 18 and 20's. I buy all my tires from discounttiredirect.com. Just got tires for our 07 ram cooper atp's and they are a good looking tire that preform great. Got all 4 shipped to the house for 618 I believe. Hankook is also another good choice.

 

Agreed. Probably more $$ than you want to spend though.

I also forgot to meantion about treadwright.com. They sell retread tires. I know a few jeep guys that run them and like them. They are all around 110.00

 

Friday I was buried frame deep several times trying to pull a friends 97 Ram 1500 ext cab 4X4 from a bog.
Never got him out but I did move his truck about 50'.
Always got myself out.
Ended up calling for a tow truck to winch him the last 150' to dry ground.
I have to get my winch hooked up.
Anything less than the Duratracs and I would've needed a tow also.

What I like is they're strength. They're quiet on the road. They're amazing off road. They have excellent warranty. They have good tread wear for many miles of use. They are winter rated so they can be used all year long.
And damn they can dig.
I left differential and skid plate marks deep in the mud but I still drove out.
