Default Cylinder 2 misfire code with trans temp warning

2001 Dakota 3.9 is misfiring and setting "cylinder 2 misfire" code. After driving it for a bit the trans temp warning light comes on but no code for trans is set. Working on tune up issues tomorrow to correct #2 misfire, but wondering why the trans temp light with the misfire? Thanks for any help.

Welcome to the forum FlumperJumper.

They may not be related.

Does it kick out of o/d when the tranny light comes on?

The overheat can be caused by a slipping torque converter clutch. It could even be a bad sensor. You'll need to get it scanned to verify the temp.

Thanks,
Yes, it does kick out of o/d and the trans is hot. I guess I was asking if that could be related to misfire since they started pretty much simultaneously.

I really can't see how they'd be connected.

I'm wondering if you really have a misfire or if there is a transmission problem causing the PCM to think there is a misfire.

How "hot" is the transmission? What's the fluid look like?
