1998 will have the OBDII system, which the transmission is fully electronically controlled by the PCM. So you will need wiring harness, PCM, transmission. Although it is doable if your lucky to find all you need. An easier way may be to get an earlier transmission where only OD and TCC is electronically controlled, simple switches can be manually controlled.

Wouldn't an older chrysler 904 box bolt up? The only thing that would need changing is the clutch safety switch to a neutral safety switch. Wouldn't have OD, but would get the job done.

Are you a city driver a lot of stop and go if so I understand lots of clutching.

If not just get your strength back and you will be fine takes some time but easier than swapping in an auto.

I understand back problems had one for 30 years and it has progressively became worse.

To succeed become religious about stretching and Yoga and #1 use caution daily on what you can and shouldn't do regarding lifting twisting anything physical.

Depending on the back problem sitting for any length of time can become very painful so watch how long you sit.

Not really contributing to your thread here but if you had back surgery are you going to put the auto in yourself?

Cause it's gonna cost a ton to have a shop do it. Might even be better selling it and just buying an auto.
