Cruise Control?
So the transmission may be downshifting.
The cruise control servo is vacuum operated. There are valves that apply/release vacuum to either side of a diaphragm that is connected to the throttle linkage. One of the valves may be at fault.
You should not be slowly accelerating - obviously. There may not be any codes displayed either. A dealer can test the entire system but it might just be worth swapping out another servo. You can get it from a boneyard.
The servo from any '00-04 Dakota with a V6 or V8 should fit. It also is used on several other models from '92-2010 so they should be easy to find. Any good boneyard should have an interchange manual.
It's p/n 4669977. New it is about $107 from a dealer, Ebay has lower.
The cable has a couple of bolts and you have to disconnect a pin to swap it to your current cable.
