Default 97 Dakota engine

Hi, New member I have a question or 2 re 5.2 engines
1did they have a problem with oil pick-up screens clogging?
2 Is there a decent factory new/reman long block available?
Thanks for your consideration

Welcome to the forum Herbo.

No. There are no problems with the oil screens clogging - if someone changed the oil occasionally.

I don't know about a factory new/reman but you shouldn't have a problem finding a 5.2 anywhere.

Bought this used, put a hundred thousand miles, changed oil & filters regularly..... Every 4500 miles has grand total of 169,000 miles now. Btw I've been a mechanic for approx. 45 years; passenger cars, heavy trucks, and construction equipment. Might just pull it out and do it myself....just gettin kinda old. Thanks for all the help...H

The 5.2 would be an easy rebuild. Plenty of parts are available for it too.

I worked on a 1500 pickup with a 200k mile 5.2 that had a clogged oil screen. I don't remember the exact symptoms, but IIRC, the oil pressure would drop to zero at speed. Anyway, I replaced the screen and it was fine. Definitely not a common problem, but it happens.

This is why I stick with synthetic. With all the miles I've got and the previous owner not being the best at maintenance, I figured it will keep things clean. I once debated using a motor flush, but feared it might loosen too much and clog the screen. I wish removing the oil cap on this 4.7, would allow me to look down into the valves but all I can see is that muck that builds up right there. Ah well, there is a little oil seeping from the valve covers, so I see that job in my future. Maybe next time I replace the plugs.

OP, is the engine knocking?

Most people don't think old dino oil will clog up their engine they are very wrong I'm talking the cheapest oil in a can oil many still use it.

They just cant see $6 over $1 to them that's a lot of money wasted to me its life extension and low wear for your engine that may be a way better bargain than saving $25 or $35 every oil change.

so 'Dino' oil for high mileage motors (usually additives) should be good for this motor,
yes ?
also no knowledge of oil screen problems, which then would be neglected oil.

If I was to use a dino oil, it would be PYB, due to it's great additive package. However, I'm sticking with Pennzoil Platinum or Ultra, if I can ever find it. Synthetic oil more resistant to coagulation than mineral based.
