Default hard steering problem

I need help figuring out why it is hard to turn the wheel on my truck.

It is a 2002 Quad Cab 4WD with a 4.7. 182,000 miles.

Turning the steering wheel sees to take more muscle than it has in the past. After making a turn the wheel requires help to return to the straight position or even close to straight. Fluids are up and the belt is tight. Where should I look first and how?

Hi Zeus,

It's a common problem. The u-joint in the lower intermediate steering shaft has seized. Replace the shaft.

You can try putting some penetrating oil on it temporarily. You will need to replace it however.

I have read it could be the shaft. Any tricks to replacing it? Anything I have to take off before? Do's and don't?

Yes you could do some real damage if done wrong and cost you around $200 to fix please read the service manual and follow it.

You can download the service manual on this forum look on the top of the forum for the 2-gen Dakota.

Hit the bolts with some penetrating oil the day before so they come out easily.

Do NOT turn the steering wheel once you disconnect the shaft. Use a seat belt, anything, to keep it from turning. If it turns, you can damage the clock spring.

It's not that bad, just awkward to reach the bolts. Hopefully the new shaft comes with replacements.
