Question How To Disable the Alarm Chime thingy ??

Long story short. My fuel level sensor is worn out and it sets off the CHIME at random times. Sometimes several times per minute.

I "tried" to drop the tank to replace the fuel level sensor/pump, but ran into major issues. The bolts holding the bed down are rusted pretty bad and so are the bolts to the tank straps. Since I have no access to a lift and would have to do all the work on the ground, I said "F*** it" and will deal with a bad sensor.

I'll just keep the tank full and use the odometer to keep track of fuel usage.

This leads me to needing to disable the Chime thingy. I know it's located somewhere on the lower/rightside kick panel.

So how do I disable this so I can have my sanity back ?

TIA!

I don't know about a 98 but on my 01 the chime is an internal part of the CTM. CTM is located in the driver's kick panel. Your 98 may also have the chime inside the CTM but you need a 98 Service Manual to be sure. If it is in the CTM and you are good with electronics you might be able to open the CTM, find the chime and remove or disconnect it. Or the 98 Service Manual may have a wire diagram for the fuel pump that shows what wire triggers the low fuel light from the float sensor. Your 98 may also be the same as my 01, and the fuel sensor signal goes to the PCM first and then to the CTM. If you could find that wire you might be able to cut it and turn the low fuel warning off. A Haynes Book for a 98 might have the wire info too, you can get one of those at most any good parts store.

Thumbs up

Very good points Jimmy.

I am pretty good at electronics and would like to trace that circuitry down.

Where is the PCM on a 98 located ?

Anyone know where I can find the wiring diagrams for a 98 On-Line ?

Question

Ok, I've verified the Chime generator is inside the CTM which is located behind the passenger's side kick panel.

I pulled the panel off and no CTM, apparently it's a bit higher behind the dashboard in that area.

How does one remove the CTM in a 98 ??

Hmm... ??

My Dakota's chime thingy is most definitely alarming for the Passenger's side kick panel and it's "supposed" to be located inside the CTM. ???

What would happen if I cut the wires (under the truck) that go to the fuel level sensor ? Would the low fuel alarm ring continuously or not ?

I would say that yes, you'd have a low fuel chime if you cut the wires.

That's what I'm afraid of.

If the CTM is located in the driver's side kickpanel, what is located in the passenger's side kickpanel ?

The chime is most definitely emitting from the passenger's side floor area. Either behind the kick panel or behind the glovebox/dashboard area.

I popped the PS kickpanel off and didn't see any metal boxes or anything like a chime thingy. ???

As Magnet said, on the passenger side is the amp, if you have the Infinity sound system.
