Default '02 3.9 lost turn signals/flasher and brake lights -- relay?

Should be an easy one... First i had them all working, then all stopped at same time. I'm guessing its a relay, since I assume they're fused separately. Appreciate any ideas-- truck is new to me and haven't got many tools out here on the road.

Ken.

Umm ... front AND rear turn signals? Plus brakes?

MY first thought would be the multifunction switch, since all three run through there.

Do the 4-way (hazard) lights work?

BTW - the "relay" (flasher module, usually called a "relay") doesn't affect the brake lights at all. If you had brakes but no flashers, I'd check the flasher module. But not having anything, I'd (as I mentioned) look at the common parts - the hazard switch (which is part of the multi function switch on a 2002) or the multi function switch (again, part of the same assembly.)

One possible source is at RockAuto (disclaimer: Long time satisfied customer, not an employee) at http://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/d...on+switch,4580 . Be sure to back up and look at the "Hazard Switch" and "Turn Signal Switch" listings also.

Thanks Ralph--

I have no working turn signals (front and rear), no 4-way (hazards), no brake lights. And no sound from the flasher when turn signal switch is engaged (left or right).

Appreciate the Rock Auto link; probably a lot cheaper than the dealer for the same/similar part.

Does the CHMSL work? The center stoplight? It doesn't run through the flasher module but is direct off the brake switch. If it isn't working, check fuse 5, should be a 30 amp, in the PDC under the hood.

There are 2 fuses for the turn signal/hazards. Fuse 1 in the PDC, 30 amp, and Fuse 19 in the junction block on the side of the dash, a 10 amp.

OK, both Fuse 1 and 5 in the PDC were blown. FWIW, both are 20s, not 30s. Perhaps that's part of the problem? Anyway, looks like I've got to figure out where the shorting is occurring.

Thanks much.

You have to have a dead short somewhere in the brake and tail light circuits to pop both fuses like that. If the previous owner ever used the truck for towing it may be a good idea to start at the rear end and see what has been done with the wiring for the rear brake lights and tail lights. There can be problems with trailer wiring like bad connections, loose grounds, corroded wires and connectors, exposed wiring shorting to ground, all of those problems can happen either from an incorrect wiring job or just from age and exposure to the elements. If you find any problems with the wiring it may be best to put it back together with solder and heat shrink or at least with heat-shrinkable weather resistant marine grade crimp connectors.
