Default Pinion Bearing

Hello,

I just bought a 2002 Dakota crew cab and noticed I have the dreaded pinion noise from the rear end. What other things should I be looking for when changing out the pinion bearings on this truck while I am in there?

Check the wear on the ring/pinions. Is it a TracLoc unit? If so, check the clutches and the clutch pack retainer clips - they are known to fail.

How are the wheel bearings?

It really depends upon how much you want to do. You could replace all the bearings if you think you have a problem.

Build sheet says:

3.92 Rear Axle Ratio
Corporate 9.25 LD Rear Axle
Anti-Spin Differential Rear Axle

Wheel bearings are quiet. Had a listen with a stethoscope and found the outer pinion bearing is making all the noise. The gears are quiet.

I am getting the SKF master rebuild kit. Having a mechanic friend do the job since he has a hoist

The pinion and carrier bearing races were pitted. The clutch pack retainer clips were in good shape. Replaced all the races, bearings, clips and axle seals. Nice and quiet now. Hopefully that never has to be done again.
