sludge in oil filler
But how long each time? The problem, worse with the 4.7 than the 5.2, is that the condensate that occurs naturally does not boil off until the engine oil has been over about 170F for a while - 5 to 10 minutes.
You may be using just it, but if your trips are only 5 to 10 minutes, you're just STARTING to boil the water out. And so, it collects, especially at the cooler filler, causing the sludge that you see.

I agree with Ralph and it is MORE of a problem in the 4.7. The oil filler is a hunk of plastic and takes longer to warm up than metal. The location is also "poor." Dodge actually came out with a "fix" that really just hides the condensation/oil mix.
I've had it for the past 16 winters.
Are you losing antifreeze? Overheating?
